How do I start my own business?

STARTING AND GROWING A BUSINESS IN THE NEW DIGITAL ECONOMY

Come up with a good idea? Mull it over, refine it, sleep on it, and then, and only then, decide to give your business idea a green light or a red light depending on what your gut says. Not what your told by others, not what your significant other tells you, not what god tells you, but, with what your gut says; and it’s not always yes if you approach your new idea pragmatically and not recklessly. There are a million ideas out there- pick the one that is best for you and your strong suits.
Got a Green Light? The rest is easy!

1 Come up with a name for your company, register your new business name with your state, for example visit OREGON’S BUSINESS REGISTRATION SERVICES – for example, you are now Jane Doe Inc.

2 After officially registering, your state will now issue you your own unique Tax ID Number . Think of this number as your businesses social security number. Take your new Tax ID Number into your bank, along with all your new state business registration documents and go open up a business bank account.
Tip: you will need to bring with you a second piece of ID such as a passport or social security card. Wear a suit and bring your new business cards with you too…

3 Order some business cards, and don’t, I repeat, don’t over do it on the design (you now have an official business name, an address, and a give yourself a good title like “President,” for example!). Some good places to order business cards online:
moo.com – cool new technology that allows you to print your one of a kind photos on your own business cards. This might be a good idea for you if you are in the creative field such as advertising or fine art portrait photography or if you want to put some pieces of your artwork on your cards alongside your contact info to really show your stuff off!
phoenixmediaadv.com – cheap, cheap flyers, business cards, posters, stickers. Not every young business will need this stuff; you may or may not. I guess it depends on your go-to-market-strategy and marketing angle. I guess it depends if you are leaving flyers at coffee shops or blasting people with viral videos (non paper, free) on Facebook? Or both? Figure out what is best to support your model.
rubberstampchamp.com – my personal favorite. Order a self healing ink stamp for $17.95, get some plane white paper business cards from you neighborhood office supply store, and just stamp your own business cards for super duper cheap!!!

4 Go into your local post office and open up a PO Box address. Now, it doesn’t matter if you are working in a 10,000 square foot high rise in Monaco or your basement in NE Portland, either way, get a PO Box address!
Tip: if you are working out of a studio apartment or dorm room for example, always denote your unit number/letter on letterheads and such with a proper euphemism for the abbreviation “apt #” – for example, address your letterheads with Suite 2, rather than Apt #2. Or, use your PO Box address of course. Using Apt makes you look a bit amateur. PO Boxes and Suites for some reason are perceived to be a bit more professional. Do you need office space?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
5 Design your own logo; create the moral framework of your brand i.e. name, logo, slogan, mission statement, etc
If don’t want to or can’t design your own logo, you can pay 250 bucks and host your own Logo Design Tournament online.
Or, a good thing to learn regardless if you design your own logo or not, is Adobe Photoshop. Everyone should learn this program (and the entire Adobe Suite might be nice too)!
Tip: you might need business doc/mgt/calendaring software too, for example iCal or Microsoft Word or maybe an open source alternative to either?
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
5 Register your business domain name, your URL ASAP! – for example www.dbclay.com
Tips:
Instant Domain Search is your name available?
GoDaddy web hosting and SSL Certificates
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
6 Get a phone number. Get an email address and preferably one that is @ your own unique URL dot com. For example, sign up johndoe@dbclay.com rather than johndoe@yahoo.com. Going with @dbclay.com rather than @yahoo.com makes you seem more “real.”
Tip: Vonage VoIP Internet Phone Service

7 Tap your network (people you know already in business, family, etc) for names and leads and contacts and assemble a “cabinet” consisting of the following key business role players:
- Certified Public Accountant, maybe a bookkeeper too
- Financial Advisor
- Lawyer #1 – General Business Advisory
- Lawyer #2 – Intellectual Property Protection
*Now, on the topic of lawyers, before you go out and pay for one, I suggest you check out this Blog post and download some free legal documents. If nothing else, checking out the 2 aforementioned weblinks will better familiarize you with certain terminology and legal lingo before you sit down with a real lawyer.
- Maybe lock in a few additional informal advisor’s too? Who do you know? Someone who has been there and done that. Someone with lots of money perhaps? People with gray hair and wisdom in their bones. They’re all business; they are an industry unto themselves. Exists a lot of free, local business advice options out there too, for example, SCORE (find one in your state), The SBA (find your local division), or your local Chamber of Commerce. Maybe join a local Entrepreneur’s group?
Tip: Any professional you engage services with, should and will give you the first meeting pro bono. Use this first meeting effectively and come prepared with a list of questions, gather as much information as possible from them, feel them out, jot down notes casually if necessary. I would recommend meeting with at least 3 people before picking the one to go with. If nothing else, you will learn a ton by having 3 free very informative meetings.

8 Make sure you have enough funding in place before you begin. Whether in the form of personal savings, a revolving line of credit with your bank, credit card credit, or, if you can find one, maybe an outsider investor? Either way, develop an annual budget, stick to it, seek counsel, keep clean books, keep accurate records, and, at any given time, make sure you have (3) months worth of operating expenses kept in reserves; it’s always good to give yourself a little buffer if shiz hits the fan unexpectedly.
