5th and 12th grade teachers
Rummaging through me childhood memories, I recently came across a few items that brought back a flood of good memories. In particular, memories surrounding two of me favorite school teachers had:
Mrs. Hartfeil and Mr. Gettle
Mrs. Hartfeil was me English teacher in 12th grade and though I got a D in her class, to this day, I have nothing but fond memories for all I learned from her. I didn’t test well; I didn’t really care; I didn’t prepare properly; I fell asleep a lot; I don’t like grammar. However, even though my test scores didn’t show it, I absorbed a lot from her class. She picked our brains. She assigned cleverly intended/curated projects. She was a bit eccentric but certainly in a good way. She assigned compelling books for us to read such as The Catcher in the Rye. I appreciate all she did for me including the comments she left surrounding my D grade:
“Grade for final exam C, Below average test results, a creative thinker…”
Mr. Gettle was me 5th grade teacher. He was probably in his mid-fifties and was probably 12 feet tall. He was a hard ass, and he kept us in line, but we all had an odd respect for him… or maybe it was fear? Ha! That being said, one of me favorite memories (of him) is that he would NOT let us wear baseball caps in class. We always tried to press the issue with him and he would not budge. He would confiscate ‘em if need be. I drew the image of him above in 1991.

Eagle Heads
When I was a kid, thanks to my older brothers Scott/Jared who taught me how to draw, I became obsessed with drawing two things: 1. rams in fights locking horns and 2. eagle heads. In my life, and as future posts with validate, I’ve probably drawn/painted/sketched about 700 Billion Eagle Heads in my life. Weird niche huh? Above image is a fluffy eagle I painted with acrylics atop stretched canvas when I was just a wee little displaced xpat positioned in the suburbs of Portland.
For some reason, my eagle heads always looked mad.
